The JHS Colour Box V2 builds on the legacy of the popular V1 with upgraded functionality, improved EQ controls, a Hi/Lo switch for massive clean headroom, and the ability to pass phantom power to condenser microphones. Designed to capture the sound and feel of a vintage Neve studio console, it delivers professional-grade tone shaping for guitar, bass, vocals, keys, or any instrument.
Expanded Gain Section
The red Gain Section features three key controls: Master, Pre-Vol, and Step.
- Master: Controls the overall output volume.
- Pre-Vol: Adjusts the gain between the two internal gain stages, functioning as a “drive” or “gain” control for adding grit, distortion, or fuzz.
- Step: Increases the gain of each preamp stage in five steps: +18 dB, +23 dB, +28 dB, +33 dB, and +39 dB.
The new Hi/Lo switch determines the amount of clean headroom available. In Lo mode, you’ll achieve ultra-clean sounds ideal for tone shaping. In Hi mode, the Colour Box V2 distorts more easily, delivering a wide range of overdrive, distortion, and fuzz tones.
A -20 dB pad switch is located on the right side of the pedal and functions when using the XLR input. This helps control levels from high-output microphones.
Advanced EQ Controls
The blue EQ Section includes three new Shift controls that correspond to the standard Treble, Middle, and Bass knobs, allowing for precise tonal shaping.
- Treble Shift: Center frequency at 10 kHz
- Middle Shift: Center frequency at 1 kHz
- Bass Shift: Center frequency at 120 Hz
The Treble, Middle, and Bass knobs each offer ±17 dB of boost or cut. For example, increasing the Mid Shift to 3 o’clock or higher and raising the Middle knob enhances high-mid presence. To reduce upper treble, set the Treble Shift to 3 o’clock or higher and lower the Treble knob below 12 o’clock. The Shift controls provide detailed frequency sculpting for any source you run through the Colour Box V2.
High-Pass Filter and Input Options
The Hi-Pass section is activated via a toggle switch below the Hi-Pass knob, sweeping from 60 Hz to 800 Hz with a 6 dB per octave slope—ideal for removing low-end rumble.
The Colour Box V2 includes a combo XLR/¼" input jack, allowing use with both instruments and microphones. The INST/XLR switch on the right side selects the active input source. In XLR mode, the unit can safely pass 48V phantom power to condenser microphones.
Professional Versatility
With its expanded controls, pristine headroom, and musical EQ shaping, the JHS Colour Box V2 is equally at home on stage, in the studio, or on a pedalboard—offering the classic tone and warmth of a vintage studio preamp in a compact pedal format.
