When I first started working in a music store back in my early 20s, I was just getting my bearings in the world of guitars. One of the standout pieces in our premium room at the time was a Music Man Luke—a signature model for Steve Lukather of Toto fame. It had a rather… unique finish and a price tag that raised more than a few eyebrows. I remember thinking, "We're never going to sell this ugly guitar." It just didn’t look like a crowd-pleaser.
But everything changed the day I plugged it in.
I was tuning guitars like usual and decided, almost out of curiosity, to give it a shot. That moment was a turning point for me. The neck was unbelievably smooth—easily the most comfortable I had ever played—and the sound was something else: balanced, dynamic, and full of character. That guitar played better than it looked, and it completely flipped my opinion. From that day on, I became a full-on Music Man fanboy. Today, I’ve got a couple of their instruments in my own collection and still swear by their craftsmanship.
Fast forward to 2025, and that love hasn’t faded.
Just recently, a beautiful 2017 Luke III in Bodhi Blue came through our doors in excellent condition. It features the HSS pickup configuration (two single coils and a humbucker at the bridge), offering a wide tonal palette—from glassy cleans to full-bodied rock tones. The Luke III, for those unfamiliar, is an evolution of the original Luke, with upgraded electronics, passive pickups, and an active preamp boost that gives it a serious edge for live or studio use. It's the kind of guitar that lets you cover a lot of ground without switching instruments.
The neck still has that same silky feel I remember, and the build quality is exactly what you’d expect from Ernie Ball Music Man—flawless.
This guitar is now available in our shop and on our webstore, and for anyone curious about the Music Man magic, I highly recommend giving it a spin. You might just have the same experience I did all those years ago.
Update: Guitar is sold.
