This STR LS549 SPM from 2007 is one of Japanese master builder Satoru Yatsuzaka’s early builds, dating from the period before STR began having its own custom bridges and pickups produced.

For a bass approaching 20 years of age, it is in very condition and features a particularly impressive combination of woods, construction and detailing.

The one-piece swamp ash body is topped with beautifully figured spalted maple, with matching spalted maple on the headstock and finger ramp. The fingerboard is made from evenly grained ebony and features distinctive brass-ringed fish-eye inlays.

The neck is constructed from 3-piece quarter-sawn hard maple, with attractive heel detailing around the angled headstock joint. The thin D neck profile offers a fast and comfortable playing feel.

Despite being an early STR build, it delivers the response, sustain, articulation and playability associated with Yatsuzaka’s later instruments. This is a highly refined Japanese-made bass with the level of craftsmanship and performance expected from instruments in the same league as Sugi, MTD, Sadowsky and Ken Smith.

The bass has been freshly serviced and is currently fitted with DR Pure Blues 40–120 strings, so it is ready to play. A bag is included.
